Ryan is a question-driven ecologist, interested in understanding broad-scale drivers of population and community change. Ryan's research involvement spans a range of species and ecosystems, including range-expanding whelks along the northeast Pacific coast (Baja California, Mexico through northern California, USA), migratory waterbirds and their benthic invertebrate prey communities in the San Francisco Bay-Delta, and caterpillars in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. As a postdoctoral researcher in the RC Lab, Ryan is partnering with the National Park Service, including collaborators at Acadia National Park, to examine how rocky intertidal communities across the northeastern United States are responding to long-term climatic stressors. The overarching goal of this work is to generate science-based information to inform climate vulnerability assessments and guide conservation planning. Ryan received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, where he was advised by Dr. Cascade J.B. Sorte, and a B.S. from the University of Denver.
